Fire Control

Thirty-nine separate Rural Fire Brigades provide rural fire protection to all areas of Cabonne. These brigades are managed through the Canobolas Zone joint agreement, established by the Local Government Councils of Cabonne, Blayney and Oange and the NSW Rural Fire Service.

The Cabonne Rural Fire District comprises an area of some 6,200 square kms with a population of 12,200 residents. The vegetation is typically agricultural grassland with significant areas of crop farming in the west with viticulture and orchard industries spread throughout.

Two major National Parks, Goobang and Nangar, four state forests and Cadia Mine add to the managed land holdings across the Shire, where nature reserves as well as commercial pine plantations are prevalent.

During the past five years the District has averaged over 200 incidents annually that have required brigade attendance. These calls range from minor incidents to severe fire emergencies and all have the potential to cause loss and property damage.

Cabonne Council along with the NSW Rural Fire Service, Canobolas Zone, are committed to reducing the severity and impact of fire to the community through the provision of community education programs, the regulation of building in bush fire prone areas, hazard reduction activities and the provision of a cohesive, enthusiastic Volunteer Rural Fire Service trained and equipped to meet the community needs.

The Bush Fire Danger Period commences each year, normally from November 1 and runs through to, normally, March 31 unless weather conditions dictate a earlier start or a later finishing period. During the BFDP no fires can be lit in the open without first gaining a Fire Permit.

Fire permits are freely available for agricultural burning from the local Brigade Captain, however for ratepayers who are not farmers, burning off all year round requires a hazard reduction certificate and these are available through the Canobolas Zone Office, telephone 6363 8888.

Substantial penalties apply to persons who use fire without or contrary to a fire permit.

Information relating to all aspects of fire management and brigade membership information can be obtained by calling the Canobolas Zone office during business hours on 63636 8888 or www.canobolas.rfs.nsw.gov.au
