FOGO
Project Overview
Cabonne Council is introducing a new FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) kerbside collection service for eligible residents. This initiative supports NSW Government waste reduction targets and will help divert organic waste from landfill. The service will provide households with a green lid bin, weekly collection, and supporting resources including a kitchen caddy and educational materials.
Why This Project Matters
The NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) requires all councils to implement FOGO services by July 2030 as part of the Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041, which aims to reduce organic waste sent to landfill by 50 percent. Local waste audits show that 45.8 percent of household waste currently placed in red lid bins could instead be composted through FOGO.
What’s Changing for Residents
Eligible households (those receiving a red lid bin service) will receive a FOGO green lid bin with weekly collection, a kitchen caddy and educational materials from January 2028. Households without kerbside waste collection are not included in this rollout.
Project Timeline
In 2025 a waste audit was completed. In December 2025 a grant funding application was submitted. In May 2026 funding was approved by the NSW EPA. Community education and engagement will take place across 2026 and 2027. The bin rollout is scheduled to begin in January 2028, with full-service implementation by March 2028.
Next Steps
Council will continue community education throughout 2026 and 2027, undertake additional waste audits from June 2026 onward, finalise rollout logistics and materials, and commence bin delivery and service rollout in 2028.
